what to check when buying a used jet ski from a private seller?
I found a used jet ski and im interested in buying it but I don't know anything about jet ski, I don't know what to check about it before I buy it, like what should i check? the engine? the battery? by the way I live in Michigan and I was just wondering also if i have to have a license for it.
Visually inspecting the engine compartment and the operating hours is good, however a few critical steps are needed.
After checking the hull, engine compartment, console display, intake, and trailer condition, then if it passes all these critiera....
#1. Regardless of boating season or not, you must require the boat/PWC to be taken to a service shop of YOUR choice for complete inspection/testing at your expense. If you fail to have it properly checked out and you end up buying a lemon, tough luck because you have no legal recourse.
Always treat anyone saying "No" to this as someone hiding something and would be best to avoid this boat/PWC. You are paying for the inspection, not them.
#2. If possible, require a test drive. A test drive will reveal many things that a service shop inspection might not notice. Most of that has to do with the performance of the boat/PWC under load, which is the critically important part.
#3. Review the boat title and/or registration and trailer title information carefully before making the sale. Make sure there isn't any anomalies regarding the paperwork, its not very often you could run into a scam, but it can happen.
Finally, when you do purchase either a PWC and/or boat in the future, don't forget the engine systems have to be winterized for the fall/winter to prevent a host of problems that can cost lots of money.
