Has anyone had the experience changing the piston on an outboard motor?
I bought a fishing boat with a bad motor, the piston is dead.
It's 110 HP Johnson 1989, I would change the piston by my self and rebuild the motor to save some money in these though economy days. Any experienced people out there to help me out with my project?tips, advice, drawings, information, etc..
Sorry, but firstly you have to determine what caused the failure, as if you just replace the piston, it may blow up again. there are many causes for this to happen, detonation, bad fuel/oil pump, called a VRO, which means "very risky oiler" ( they were the prime reason these engines blew up ) or just stuck rings. you will have to take the powerhead to a competent machine shop to have the cylinder bored ( if they have the correct set up ) hone all the other cylinders, new rings on all the pistons, make certain that the reed valves are in good condition, rebuild both carburators and check the whole ignition system for defects, could also be that one of the coils were bad, or a powerpack, or the trigger, which I doubt, but you have work ahead of you and you need to have the proper tools. Best of luck. If it were me, I would look into finding a good used replacement, although you have no guaranty that that one will not blow up also, Now that the canucks have taken over OMC, their engines seems to stay together. OMC's demise was their Fitch motors.
