1999 Yamaha Wave Runner XL 1200 will not crank?

We use this jet ski every year and it worked perfectly last summer. We just took the cover off last week and we put the batterie back in and it tried to start by itself. The key was not in it, and no body was near the start button. So I know for sure that it tried to start by itself. However, it would not fully start. It tried to start but it could not even fully crank over. It acted like the batterie was low or dead. It would partly crank over but not actually run. So I thought it need a new batterie, when I put the new batterie in, it would not even try to crank over, it would not even try to start. It acted as if there was no power to it at all. But when I push the start button, on the display, the word "START" flashed on the screen, but the screen goes blank when I release the start button. Why will it not start, why did it try to start by itself, and why did this happen so randomly? Thanks in advance.

I'll venture a guess at this one. I think your problem is with the solenoid on the starter. Normally the solenoid will be built onto the side of the starter on a jet ski. I think that either the solenoid is fused in the closed position or the retractor spring is broken. If it's fused closed that means whenever power is applied to the ski the starter motor will try to turn and drain the battery. If it's the retractor spring then you're relying on gravity to make or break the solenoid contacts. When you turn the key do you hear any clicking sounds? When the battery was first installed the engine tried to turn, but wouldn't start because the ignition key wasn't turned to provide power to the ignition circuits. When the new battery was installed the ignition circuits were getting power, but you were no longer getting power to the starter to crank the engine. You need to go back and gather more information to figure out what's wrong. If you can't do it yourself it may be time to find a mechanic.

You also might be interested to know that when you take the ski out of winter storage is the time when problems are most likely to show themselves. A 1999 wave runner is now 11 years old. Parts are going to wear out, and after another winter for electrical contacts to oxidize and acids to work on other parts of the engine you have to expect some problems to creep in.

Good luck with your troubleshooting, doesn't sound like it should be all that expensive..
