Got skunked at Shasta, was it my fault?
I was using a 30 pound braid at 8# diameter to troll for trout and salmon. It was a moss green line. I was also using a slightly heavy set of rods. I was trolling about 80% of the time at about 2 knots from a patio boat at about 200 feet from the motor. I used everything I had, cranks, inlines, kastmasters, and jointed raps. I didn't even get a slight nibble. Was it my gear and my tactics in this lake or was it just a lack of fish in my vicinity? Was my setup a little too much in your opinion?
Sorry for the dismal results there bro but I troll 6 pound line when going deep and though I would normally use green there I use clear for all trout. It could have been the trolling speed I mix it up lots and speed up before going into the slow down before turning too. For going as deep as I can I want to use a double tie on swivel with 10 pound fluorocarbon leader and I will even use a rubber band to connect the weight to the swivel when trolling baits using the heavier (I use rebar) weights to get the baits down even deeper, when I get bit the band pops and the weight drops. I fight the fish on the lite line. The water temp there was what? if under 55 degrees the fish could have been closer to the surface than your baits were being trolled at. It could have been lack of fish where you were but highly unlikely if most the boats out were in your vicinity. But then trolling is not the only way to catch lake trout. Being on the east side of the lake at sunrise casting spinners and lures up to the shore line (fishing the top ten feet) is a must, just like being on the west side at dusk is. (always keeping your shadows off the water you are fishing) somehow somewhere it gets better, it does, because with trout they are thinking about or are eating 50% of the time they are awake. Something wasn't right, how many earthquakes are going on up there? it could have sadly been as easy as that, nothing shuts down fishing faster than earthquakes. And we've been shaking in So cal to the tune of hundreds of quakes over the past 48 hours.
